Private children’s ADHD assessments in London

Specialist support in ADHD diagnoses for children
Receiving an attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis for your child is not something to worry about. In fact, we often find that it can bring a sense of clarity and relief to families, as it allows strategies to be developed that can manage symptoms effectively.

Recognising ADHD symptoms in children

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects your child’s ability to pay attention, control impulsive behaviours and manage hyperactivity.

While commonly diagnosed in childhood, ADHD can be a difficult condition to identify because everyone can occasionally exhibit some traits of the condition.

Understanding the symptoms of ADHD can therefore be an important first step towards recognising the condition in children and moving towards a diagnosis. Some of the main symptoms include:

  • Inattention:
    • Difficulty staying focused on tasks or activities, often getting easily distracted
    • Frequently making careless mistakes or overlooking details
    • Struggling to organise tasks and belongings
    • Forgetfulness, such as forgetting to do homework or chores
  • Hyperactivity:
    • Constant restlessness, often fidgeting or squirming in their seat
    • Difficulty staying seated, constantly feeling the need to move around
    • Talking excessively and interrupting others during conversations or activities
    • Feeling restless or constantly ‘on the go.
  • Impulsivity:
    • Acting without thinking about the consequences
    • Difficulty waiting for their turn or waiting patiently in line
    • Blurting out answers or comments without being called upon
    • Interrupting or intruding on others’ conversations or activities

Not all children with ADHD will show the same symptoms as one another.

But, if you recognise any persistent patterns of behaviour that are affecting your child’s day-to-day life or performance at school, an ADHD assessment could help determine whether ADHD is the cause.

How the ADHD diagnosis process works

At Dementech Neurosciences, our team of experienced paediatric neurologists understand the complexities of living with ADHD. That’s why we tailor our assessments around your child, observing and evaluating their skills for communication, sensory processing and social interactions.

Our team follow strict guidelines set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to diagnose a wide range of neurodiverse conditions, including ADHD. When evaluating your child, we break our assessment process into four main steps:

Step 1: Neurodevelopmental assessment

Over the course of one or two hours, our clinicians will observe and interact with your child to evaluate how they communicate, interact in social settings and distinguish certain senses in their surrounding environment.

Step 2: Academic evaluation

In collaboration with their school, we will assess how well your child is doing academically by reviewing their school reports and talking to their teachers. Using these insights, we will then be able to assess their specific strengths and address any challenges they face.

Step 3: Psychological assessment

Our clinicians will delve deeper into your child’s cognitive abilities, emotional wellbeing and behavioural patterns. By understanding their psychological profile, we can then combine this information with the results of the neurodevelopmental assessment and academic evaluation to make a diagnosis.

Step 4: Support sessions

We’re committed to providing ongoing support to you and your child. That’s why, if they’re diagnosed, you will be set up with regular sessions with a specialist neurologist every two months. This will allow you to seek expert advice on their condition and assess their current management strategy.

No, there are no risks or side effects associated with ADHD assessment. The assessment process typically involves interviews, questionnaires and behavioural observations, which are all non-invasive.

Our team of experienced paediatricians, child psychologists, developmental paediatricians and neuropsychologists will also do all they can to ensure a safe, comfortable and supportive environment throughout your child’s evaluation.

The length of an ADHD assessment can vary depending on a range of factors, such as the complexity of your child’s symptoms, the need for additional assessments and the thoroughness of the evaluation.

However, they are typically spread over multiple sessions, and each session will last a couple of hours.

After your child’s ADHD assessment, our team will discuss the results with you and provide recommendations for further steps. This may include behavioural interventions, ADHD medication options and collaboration with school counsellors, educational psychologists and behavioural therapists.

We will then work together to develop an individualised plan, which may include creating an Individualised Education Program (IEP) to support your child’s academic progress.
