At Dementech Neurosciences, our highly experienced team can diagnose, treat and offer tailored ongoing care to patients with a wide range of dementia-related conditions.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is not a single disease. It is a general term used to define many conditions that affect the brain in some way and will often cause a decline in brain function. This can include conditions like:

  1. Alzheimer’s disease: the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be caused by an abnormal build-up of proteins around brain cells.
  2. Vascular dementia: often associated with strokes, this condition is caused by having a reduced blood flow to the brain which, over time, can damage and kill brain cells.
  3. Lewy body dementia: this condition is caused by the development of Lewy bodies (tiny protein clumps) inside brain cells, which damages the way they work and communicate.
  4. Frontotemporal dementia: often associated with younger people, this condition causes an abnormal clumping of proteins in the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain.
  5. Parkinson’s disease dementia: also known as Parkinsonian dementia, this condition causes a gradual cognitive decline that can impact your concentration and memory.

Most of the diseases that cause dementia are associated with an abnormal build-up of proteins in the brain. Over time, this gradual accumulation of proteins can impact the function of nerve cells, causing them to die and, eventually, certain areas of the brain to shrink.

However, with over two hundred subtypes, each disease can cause different symptoms. Conditions like pernicious anaemia, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and hematomas, for example, can all also cause symptoms commonly associated with dementia. This can then make it difficult to recognise, understand and manage a specific condition.

That’s why our team at Dementech Neurosciences are highly trained to offer bespoke, end-to-end support to patients – from delivering expert-level diagnostics to the latest medical interventions.

Recognising the signs and symptoms of dementia

Being able to recognise the symptoms of dementia is essential for ensuring it is caught early. However, with so many subtypes, each condition can have different symptoms, making it difficult to diagnose which type of dementia it could be.

Generally speaking, some of the early symptoms that are shared across a wide variety of dementia conditions include:

  1. Memory loss
  2. Increased difficulty doing activities that require planning
  3. Confusion in unfamiliar environments
  4. Struggling to find the right words
  5. Communication and language difficulties
  6. Reduced ability to focus and pay attention
  7. Difficulty with numbers and handling money
  8. Changes in personality and mood

Diagnosing dementia: how the process works

Diagnosing which dementia condition you or someone you know has, will depend on the type and severity of the symptoms. That’s why it’s so important to work with a specialist who can assess your condition properly using a variety of diagnostic tests and techniques.

At Dementech Neurosciences, our team of specialist neurologists understand the complexities of living with dementia. We can tailor the diagnostic assessments we use around your specific needs and symptoms. This can include:

  1. Personal and medical history review: during your initial assessment with us, your consultant will assess your education, employment and medical background to help understand any potential risk factors or underlying conditions you might have.
  2. Mental ability assessment: this evaluation allows us to assess various factors associated with your cognitive function, including your memory, attention and communication skills.
  3. Blood tests: these will be used to check the function of your liver, kidneys and thyroid. They will also help determine your haemoglobin A1c, vitamin B12 and folate levels to rule out other potential causes.
  4. Urine test: this may be recommended to assess your overall health further and rule out any potential urinary tract infections or possible underlying conditions.
  5. Imaging scans: MRI, CT and, in some cases, PET scans can be used to provide detailed information about your brain structure, helping identify any abnormalities, blood vessel damage or shrinkages in certain areas. They can also help with diagnosing conditions like stroke and brain tumours to help diagnose the cause of your dementia.

“Dementech Neurosciences is a relatively new clinic specialising in the scientific assessment and treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. It represents a significant development in the treatment of Parkinson’s and has done a great job of establishing itself and its reputation in a short period of time. The premises are extremely well situated in central London, the consultant neurologists are all at the top of their field in their specialisation of the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease, and the clinical and administrative staff are of a similar standard. The atmosphere of the clinic is positive and the results, in the short period of time I have been able to assess, have been similarly positive.”

“Have had nothing but kindness and professionalism from Dementech and all their staff. From their initial guidance by Shakeela, through to staff conducting the MRI tests and Dr. Lucio D’Anna for his expertise clarity of explanation, compassion and consideration. Special mention to Zobia, who saved the day with her quick thinking that helped my mother-in-law to obtain extended care. Overall a perfect experience. Cannot recommend them enough.”
