There are three main symptoms of Parkinson’s disease:
Slowness of movement
Early symptoms of the disease may be mild and not everyone experiences PD in the same way. However, symptoms worsen over time and may involve impaired balance, speech problems (softened voice, slurred speech), swallowing problems, bowel and bladder problems, difficulties at night (discomfort in bed, cramps, disturbed sleep pattern) and tiredness during the day. Sometimes the skin can become greasy and those affected might experience excessive sweating.
Along with this constipation, bladder and sexual problems are common. People often experience depression, anxiety and memory problems. In more advanced stages of the condition, patients may develop dementia and experience hallucinations.
Only about 10-15% of PD cases have been linked to a genetic cause, whereas most cases of PD are called idiopathic or sporadic, meaning the cause is unknown.
Risk Assessment & Prevention
Although the exact cause of the disease is still unknown, the condition occurs when nerve cells in the brain start to die which affects the level of a chemical which is responsible for sending messages to the part of the brain that controls movement.

Parkinson’s Disease Diagnosis
There is no single test to diagnosis Parkinson’s and reaching a conclusive diagnosis can take time. At Dementech Neurosciences London clinic we offer different levels of care to treat patients with Parkinson’s. Because it is far more effective to prevent a disease, our approach involves risk assessments, prevention strategies and tools to manage symptoms and treat the condition and lessen its impact.
However, in cases where a diagnosis of a disease has been established, our multidisciplinary team will do everything possible to treat symptoms and prevent them from progressing further, improving the patient’s quality of life, emotional health and well-being.
Parkinson’s Disease Treatment
Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease there are many medications and advanced treatments (including brain stimulation surgery) available to treat the symptoms.
The effectiveness of the main drug treatment can wear off over time and its long-term use can cause dyskinesia, involuntary twisting movements of the arms, legs or face.
At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to treat Parkinson’s disease. Our team of experts work together to provide an individual treatment plan to monitor symptoms and manage the condition.
Our team includes a speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, dietitian, psychologist and psychiatrist who provide speech therapy, nutrition advice and counselling.
Alongside this, we use state-of-the-art technology such as the PKG to monitor and effectively treat symptoms and complications of PD.
What our patients say
My family and I experienced one of the hardest times of our lives having to deal with my wife’s deteriorating condition. I would like to personally thank the lovely young lady Zobiaa from Dementech, for showering us with compassion, empathy and genuine care and concern. Her professionalism, high-level customer service and communication, eye for detail, and willingness to go the extra mile to accommodate our needs and make not only my wife, but our whole family, feel as comfortable and supported as possible…
Paul Allen, Dementech patient
Great service! I approached Dementech in order to set up a Lasting Power of Attorney for my father. The solicitor was concerned about my fathers speech impediment, which could imply dementia and required a specialist medical letter. The NHS seemed reluctant to provide anything that had a legal requirement. I must mention my father does the Times crossword everyday and runs his own household. Dementech where very fast at providing an appointment and very professional all the way…
Chris Seymour Smith, Dementech patient
Amazing service! Took care of every single need I had and made sure I felt comfortable throughout the whole process!
Jordan Rabhi, Dementech patient
At Dementech Neurosciences we are at the forefront of our understanding of PD and we use cutting-edge technology CANTAB to assess the severity of cognitive deficits in patients with Parkinson’s disease. This helps us to provide an early diagnosis of cognitive impairment and outline the best treatment option to manage the condition.
We also offer the opportunity for patients to participate in clinical trials which aim to delay the progression of the disease before they become available to the public.
