Anxiety Symptoms
Everybody experiences anxious thoughts from time to time – this is normal and does not automatically mean there is anything wrong. However, for many people, anxiety can be a sign of a disorder which can become very distressing and problematic, sometimes having a significant impact on day-to-day life and ability to function.
There are various forms of anxiety disorders, which can differ in how they manifest and the effect they have. However, there are a number of symptoms associated with anxiety, which can be both psychological and physical. Common anxiety symptoms include:
- An intense sense of fear, dread or impending doom
- Feeling very on edge and unable to relax
- Nervousness and irritability
- Heightened awareness and feeling hyper alert and on guard
- Restlessness and difficulty concentrating
- Sensations of palpitations, rapid heart rate and breathing/breathlessness
- Sleep disturbance or insomnia
- Avoidance behaviours (avoiding situations/people/things that trigger fear or stress)
- Exhaustion
- Dizziness and pins and needles/tingling
- Muscle aches
- Excessive sweating
- Feeling sick or unwell for no reason
Diagnosing Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety can vary from person to person. At Dementech’s London anxiety clinic, we believe treating every patient as an individual is vital – and this starts with the diagnostic process.
This will usually involve two consultations, one with a mental health care specialist (psychologist or psychiatrist), who will ask you about your symptoms, your thoughts, feelings and behaviour patterns, followed by a series of individualised neuropsychological assessments performed by a neuropsychologist.
A physical examination, laboratory tests and imaging scans are sometimes necessary in order to rule out other physical problems that could possibly be causing your symptoms
Treating and Managing Anxiety
At Dementech, we offer a range of options for London anxiety therapy.
How anxiety is treated and managed largely depends on the type of anxiety disorder an individual has, as well as the severity and nature of the symptoms and the impact it’s having on their mental health, wellbeing and day-to-day life. There can sometimes be an element of personal preference too.
At Dementech, following a thorough assessment, our specialist team of Neuropsychologists and Mental Health Experts will help tailor a comprehensive care plan to best suit your individual needs.
This may include pharmacologic (consultation with a psychiatrist) and non-pharmacologic (consultation with a psychotherapist) management interventions. Sometimes, a combination of both can be beneficial.
We can also provide guidance on lifestyle measures to help support your anxiety therapy and treatment. For example, there is strong evidence that regular physical exercise can be beneficial in helping manage anxiety symptoms.
Ensuring you get plenty of sleep is also important – this may mean addressing problems such as insomnia separately, to ensure this is appropriately managed too.
