What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a nervous system disorder that mostly affects your movement. This is due to a lack of brain cells being able to produce dopamine – a chemical that helps to coordinate movement. PD is a progressive disease, and mild symptoms will gradually worsen as time goes on. Initially, patients may experience tremors and slight slurring of speech.
Only about 10-15% of PD cases have been linked to a genetic cause, whereas most cases of PD are called idiopathic or sporadic, meaning the cause is unknown.
Is there a cure for Parkinson's Disease?
While there is no single cure for Parkinson’s, early intervention and specialist support can be extremely helpful when it comes to managing the symptoms. Medications can also benefit some patients depending on their experience with the disease and their medical history. It’s important to seek support so that you can have the very best chance of being able to manage your Parkinson’s Disease symptoms. At Dementech, our PD experts will be able to provide end-to-end support for patients and their families as they deal with the life-changing effects of Parkinson’s.
What are the common symptoms of Parkinson's Disease?
People with PD often experience depression, anxiety and memory problems as the disease progresses. In more advanced stages of the condition, patients may also develop dementia and experience hallucinations, paranoia and delusions. It is important to acknowledge the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease early to ensure you can receive the best diagnosis and treatment for the condition. Here are some common signs of Parkinson’s Disease.
- Shaking or tremor in a body part when at rest
- Stiffness in the muscle
- Loss of sense of smell
- Sleep disturbances
- Bradykinesia – slowness of movement
- A sudden inability to move
- Difficulty with multitasking
- Loss of volume in speech
- A stooped posture
- Sleep disturbances
- Small handwriting (micrographia)
- Fluctuation with blood pressure
When should you see a Neurologist?
Neurologists are trained in the diagnosis and treatment of nervous system illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease. Neurologists often receive additional training in Parkinson’s disease management, including the administration of Parkinson’s medication, and can provide excellent treatment courses and management advice for this disease. If you are experiencing any symptoms of PD or could be of greater risk, book an appointment with our Private Neurologists today.

While there is currently a lot of research being conducted around PD and ways to diagnose the disease, unfortunately, there is no single test to diagnose Parkinson’s at the moment. However, accurate diagnosis is critical in neurology and even more so for degenerative conditions – so we use the highest quality technology, coupled with some of the world’s most renowned experts in Parkinson’s Disease, to deliver an accurate diagnosis, helping us guide our patients to the best possible course of treatment.
Due to the complexity involved in testing, the wrong diagnosis is common with many neurological diseases. A wrong diagnosis can expose you to the wrong course of treatment and a negative outcome. We rely on only the top PD experts to work at Dementech and provide the highest standard assessments and quality of care for every individual suffering from Parkinson’s.
At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer different levels of care to treat patients with Parkinson’s and support them in their management of the symptoms. We understand that it can be far more effective to prevent disease, and so our approach involves risk assessments, prevention strategies and helpful tools to treat the condition and lessen its impact.
However, in cases where a diagnosis of a disease has been established already, our multidisciplinary team will do everything possible to treat symptoms and prevent them from progressing further.
If one of your family members suffers or is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, we offer an advanced testing program that can detect the probability of you ever developing the disease. Thanks to the cutting-edge technology that has been developed in collaboration with Dementech, we can benefit from valuable insights in terms of being able to assess the possibility of your developing Parkinson’s Disease.
Having this test is of critical importance for people who could be genetically predisposed. The earlier you are diagnosed, the more help we can provide with a long-term course of treatment and symptom management tools. When Parkinson’s Disease is diagnosed at an advanced stage, it is more difficult to deal with the common symptoms.
At Dementech, we are committed to using the latest and most advanced testing methods. We collaborate with famous universities and medical organisations for the development of new testing methods and experimental treatments. We also use a combination of testing methods to establish an accurate diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, helping you to receive the best possible support.
At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to treating Parkinson’s Disease. Our team of experts work together to provide an individual treatment plan to monitor symptoms and manage the condition.
While there currently isn’t a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, there are many medications and advanced treatments (including brain stimulation surgery) available to help manage the difficult symptoms. Please note that the effectiveness of the main drug treatment can wear off over time, and its long-term use can cause dyskinesia, and involuntary twisting movements of the arms, legs or face. We will be sure to assess the risks of this treatment across each patient.
Our team of PD specialists includes a speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, dietitian, psychologist and psychiatrist who provide speech therapy, nutrition advice and counselling. Alongside this expert team, we use state-of-the-art technology such as The Parkinson’s KinetiGraph (PKG) to monitor and effectively treat symptoms and complications of PD.
We are proud to be London’s leading provider of specialist private neurology, psychiatry and psychology services. Our specialisms span many areas of mental health and wellbeing, from old age psychology and dementia care, to paediatrics and movement disorders. Patient Success Stories
Dementech Neurosciences prides itself on delivering exceptional patient care. Here are just some of our patient testimonials.
“The clinic is very welcoming. I would especially like to thank Shakeela and Sobia who took good care of us and made sure my father in law was comfortable as he was very nervous. They were very polite. Dr was excellent. I would recommend this clinic. My father in law was very nervous when he arrived in the clinic but he left with a smile. This explains it all about the clinic. How wonderful they are.”
“Dementech Neurosciences is a relatively new clinic specialising in the scientific assessment and treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. It represents a significant development in the treatment of Parkinson’s and has done a great job of establishing itself and its reputation in a short period of time. The premises are extremely well situated in central London, the consultant neurologists are all at the top of their field in their specialisation of the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease, and the clinical and administrative staff are of a similar standard. The atmosphere of the clinic is positive and the results, in the short period of time I have been able to assess, have been similarly positive.”
“A highly recommended neurological clinic operated on very high standards from wonderful professionals. Dr. Dimitrov has treated our Parkinson’s disease symptoms by fine-tuning the medication received in a scientific way that undoubtedly proves his high expertise on the topic. We have received advice that has significantly affected the quality of life and this is very much appreciated.”
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. It is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. The exact cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.
There are multiple risk factors for Parkinson’s disease. These include your age, as most people develop Parkinson’s over the age of 60, genetics, exposure to toxins and sex – men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than men.
At Dementech, we carry out Parksinson’s disease tests within two days of them being requested, and we will get the results back within 48 hours.
During a consultation we will carry out an assessment and go through your medical history with a view to getting a diagnosis on Parkinson’s Disease. From there, you will receive a treatment plan and a full consultation report.
Where possible, we aim to see patients the same day. We will respond to your request within 24 hours (48 hours on weekends)
A pleasure to have the expertise, vision & support of Dementech, most especially the care and trust of Dr. D’Anna, Anca and the team!
