Parkinson's disease treatment

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a nervous system disorder that mostly affects your movement. This is due to a lack of brain cells being able to produce dopamine - a chemical that helps to coordinate movement. PD is a progressive disease, and mild symptoms will gradually worsen as time goes on. Initially, patients may experience tremors and slight slurring of speech.

Only about 10-15% of PD cases have been linked to a genetic cause, whereas most cases of PD are called idiopathic or sporadic, meaning the cause is unknown.

While there is no single cure for Parkinson’s, early intervention and specialist support can be extremely helpful when it comes to managing the symptoms. Medications can also benefit some patients depending on their experience of the disease and their medical history. It’s important to seek support so that you can have the very best chance of being able to manage your Parkinson’s Disease symptoms. At Dementech, our PD experts will be able to provide end-to-end support for patients and their families as they deal with the life changing effects of Parkinson’s.

Our Happy Patients

The clinic is very welcoming. I would especially like to thank Shakeela and Sobia who took good care of us and made sure my father in law was comfortable as he was very nervous. They were very polite. Dr was excellent. I would recommend this clinic. My father in law was very nervous when he arrived in the clinic but he left with a smile. This explains it all about the clinic. How wonderful they are.R Mahmood
Dementech Neurosciences is a relatively new clinic specialising in the scientific assessment and treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. It represents a significant development in the treatment of Parkinson’s and has done a great job to establish itself and its reputation in a short period of time. The premises are extremely well situated in central London, the consultant neurologists are all at the top of their field in their specialisation of the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease, and the clinical and administrative staff are of a similar standard. The atmosphere of the clinic is positive and the results, in the short period of time I have been able to assess, have been similarly positive.Anonymous

Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms

The severity and progression of Parkinson’s Disease symptoms vary from person to person. Patients may not experience all of the symptoms discussed below.

Early symptoms of the disease will probably be relatively mild, however, these symptoms will worsen over time. Initially, patients may find they are experiencing:

  • Impaired balance
  • Speech problems (softened voice, slurred speech)
  • Swallowing problems
  • Bowel and bladder problems
  • Difficulties at night (discomfort in bed, cramps, disturbed sleep pattern) and tiredness during the day
  • Greasy skin
  • Excessive sweating

People with PD often experience depression, anxiety and memory problems as the disease progresses. In more advanced stages of the condition, patients may also develop dementia and experience hallucinations, paranoia and delusions.

Some of the more common symptoms include:

  • Shaking or tremor in a body part when at rest
  • Stiffness in the muscle
  • Loss of sense of smell
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Bradykinesia – slowness of movement
  • Depression
  • A sudden inability to move
  • Difficulty with multitasking
  • Apathy
  • Loss of volume in speech
  • A stooped posture
  • Small handwriting (micrographia)
  • Fatigue
  • Fluctuation with blood pressure

Parkinson’s Disease Diagnosis

While there is currently a lot of research being conducted around PD and ways to diagnose the disease, unfortunately, there is no single test to diagnose Parkinson’s at the moment. However, accurate diagnosis is critical in neurology and even more so for degenerative conditions - so we use the highest quality technology, coupled with some of the world’s most renowned experts in Parkinson’s Disease, to deliver accurate diagnosis, helping us guide our patients to the best possible course of treatment.

Due to the complexity involved in testing, wrong diagnosis is common with many neurological diseases. Wrong diagnosis can expose you to the wrong course of treatment and a negative outcome. We rely on only the top PD experts to work at Dementech and provide the highest standard assessments and quality of care for every individual suffering with Parkinson’s.

At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer different levels of care to treat patients with Parkinson’s and support them in their management of the symptoms. We understand that it can be far more effective to prevent a disease, and so our approach involves risk assessments, prevention strategies and helpful tools to treat the condition and lessen its impact.

However, in cases where a diagnosis of a disease has been established already, our multidisciplinary team will do everything possible to treat symptoms and prevent them from progressing further.

Parkinson’s Disease Treatment

At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to treat Parkinson’s Disease. Our team of experts work together to provide an individual treatment plan to monitor symptoms and manage the condition.

While there currently isn't a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, there are many medications and advanced treatments (including brain stimulation surgery) available to help manage the difficult symptoms. Please note that the effectiveness of the main drug treatment can wear off over time, and its long-term use can cause dyskinesia, involuntary twisting movements of the arms, legs or face. We will be sure to assess the risks of this treatment across each patient.

Our team of PD specialists includes a speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, dietitian, psychologist and psychiatrist who provide speech therapy, nutrition advice and counselling. Alongside this expert team, we use state-of-the-art technology such as The Parkinson's KinetiGraph (PKG) to monitor and effectively treat symptoms and complications of PD.

Parkinson’s Disease Testing Methods

  • Computerised assessments of cognitive function
  • Personal assessment by a top neurologist
  • Brain scans using the latest MRI technology
  • Blood tests

Risk Assessment & Prevention For Parkinson’s Disease

If one of your family members suffered or is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, we offer an advanced testing program that can detect the probability of you ever developing the disease. Thanks to the cutting-edge technology that has been developed in collaboration with Dementech, we can benefit from valuable insights in terms of being able to assess the possibility of you developing Parkinson’s Disease.

Having this test is of critical importance for people who could be genetically predisposed. The earlier you are diagnosed, the more help we can provide with a long-term course of treatment and symptom management tools. When Parkinson’s Disease is diagnosed at an advanced stage, it is more difficult to deal with the common symptoms.

At Dementech, we are committed to using the latest and most advanced testing methods. We collaborate with famous universities and medical organisations for the development of new testing methods and experimental treatments. We also use a combination of testing methods to establish an accurate diagnosis for Parkinson’s Disease, helping you to receive the best possible support.
