Dr. Maria Papachatzaki – Consultant Neurologist, MS Specialist
Dr Maria Papachatzaki is a Consultant Neurologist with extensive experience in multiple sclerosis and related disorders. Currently participating as a site lead PI in number of research projects including the UK MS Register and UK Pregnancy Register, and a multi-ethnic genetics study in MS (ADAMS). She has wide experience in pharmaceutical clinical trials of DMDs and symptomatic drugs for PwMS. Worked as sub-investigator for multiple clinical trials of commercial phase III trials that have led to licensed medications, whilst working in Royal London Hospital such as ORATORIO & OPERA (Ocrelizumab), ASCEND (Natalizumab), CAMMS ext (Alemtuzumab), MS321extension, Topic, DECIDE (205MS301), INFORMS (FTY 7202306), ADVANCE (105MS301), Medimmune, INSPIRE, 205MS Anti-lingo.
She finished her specialisation in Neurology in 2011 in in AIGINITEION University Hospital, 1 st Neurology clinic of University of Athens in Greece.
In 2006 awarded a Master’s degree in Basic Neuroscience with relevant publications, in the Medical School of the University of Crete, Heraklion, Crete, Greece under Dr. A. Plaitakis, Professor of Neurology in University of Crete and chief of neurological, proteomics and genetic lab of the Medical School of University of Crete. For the completion of MSc degree she received scholarship from the FOTEINOS Foundation in Heraklion, Crete, Greece
In 2011 was awarded a PhD on Neurosciences with relevant publications, in Molecular and behavioural Pharmacology, in Medical School of University of Crete. Under Dr Venetia Zachariou, Professor of Pharmacology in Medical School of the University of Crete, Greece and Yale University in USA. For the completion of this project she was awarder funding by the European PENED research funds.
Worked as Post Doc in multiple sclerosis for years Barts MS Team in Blizard Institute of the cell, QMUL/ Barts Health NHS Trust in London where she worked along prestige colleagues in RLH in many multiple sclerosis projects involving clinical trials & led projects on basic research on the pathogenesis and neurophysiology of MS disease under Professor Klaus Schmierer. Teaching and activities in public and patient involvement have always been part of her interests with participation in projects such as Digesting Science and MS Research Days.
Since December 2018 she is the clinical lead of MS specialist services in Basildon University Hospital in Essex where she is leading actions in improving the service provision for patients with MS, providing them access to ongoing clinical trials and participating actively in multiple sclerosis projects.
Outside work she enjoys photography and arts and spending time with close family and friends.
