Depression: Signs, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Depression is an illness that can affect the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself and the way you think about everything. Depression is more than a passing mood. It is not a sign of weakness, and it cannot be willed or wished away.

Depression Symptoms

Everybody experiences low moods from time to time, and that’s a normal part of life and being human. But clinical depression or depressive disorders are different to this and symptoms will usually be more severe and ongoing – people can’t just ‘snap out of it’ or get better overnight.

Typical symptoms for all depressive disorders include a very depressed low mood, diminished interest and pleasure in most activities, appetite changes, problems with sleep, fatigue, problems with concentration and in more severe cases, recurrent thoughts of death.

There might be specific ‘triggers’ that lead to depression (such as very stressful events and life changes, or trauma) but sometimes, episodes of depression can seemingly come and go for no apparent reason. This is because depressive disorders can have complex causes, which are physiological as well as psychological.

Depression Diagnosis

It is important to get an accurate diagnosis for depression, as this is often the first key step in managing and treating depression.

The diagnostic process will usually involve two consultations, one with a mental health care specialist (psychologist or psychiatrist), who will ask you about your symptoms, your thoughts, feelings and behaviour patterns, followed by a series of individualised neuropsychological assessments performed by a neuropsychologist.

A physical examination, laboratory tests and imaging scans are sometimes necessary to rule out other physical problems that could cause your symptoms.

In cases where a diagnosis of a disease has been established, our multidisciplinary team will do everything humanly possible to treat symptoms and prevent them from progressing further, involving as many specialists as required, hence improving the quality of life, the emotional health and wellbeing of each individual.

In addition to depression counselling in London and other therapies, it is always a good idea to consider any lifestyle measures that may help support your wellbeing.
