Comprehensive Care and Advanced Therapies for Managing Parkinson's Symptoms

Parkinson’s disease puts a lot of strain on the body. While there is no cure for the condition, Dementech Neurosciences offers services that can diagnose and manage your symptoms.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease affects your nervous system and body parts, such as your hands, which your nerves control. Parkinson’s disease is progressive, meaning it gets worse. There’s no cure for the condition but treatments can help manage your symptoms effectively.

Parkinson’s disease occurs when neurons in your brain gradually break down or die. These neurons are responsible for producing important chemicals that help regulate brain activity. When their levels decrease, it leads to irregular brain function and results in symptoms such as tremors.

The exact cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown.

Causes of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease is caused by the gradual loss of nerve cells in part of the brain called the substantia nigra.

The loss of these nerve cells that cause Parkinson’s disease don’t have a single known cause. It’s believed to be a combination of factors including:

  • Abnormal protein build-up: Dying nerve cells contain clumps of proteins called alpha-synuclein. These clumps can interfere with the cell’s ability to function and clear waste which can cause cells to die.
  • Mitochondrial dysfunction: Damage to mitochondria which are tiny structures inside of cells, can make them more vulnerable.
  • Oxidative stress: If too many harmful molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS) build up in a cell, they can harm its proteins, DNA and cell membranes which can result in the cell dying.
  • Genetic factors: Most cases are not inherited. However, mutations in certain genes can increase the risk of developing early-onset Parksinson’s disease.
  • Environmental exposures: Long-term exposure to some pesticides and chemicals has been linked to a higher risk of Parksinson’s disease.
  • Inflammation in the brain: If the brain’s immune system becomes overactive, it can release harmful chemicals that can damage neurons.

Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms

In its early stages, Parkinson’s may not cause noticeable symptoms. However, as it progresses, your symptoms may worsen and become evident.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include:

  • Tremors – continuous shaking of a limb, typically the hands or fingers
  • Slowed movements (bradykinesia)
  • Muscle stiffness – causing pain and limiting your movement
  • Difficulty multitasking
  • Posture or balance changes – you may stoop more or fall over often
  • Changes in speech – you might start slurring and talking too quietly or quickly
  • Loss of smell
  • Handwriting changes – often, it becomes smaller (micrographia)
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue – sometimes accompanied by sleep disturbances
  • Fluctuating blood pressure

While these symptoms can greatly disrupt daily life, treatment for Parkinson’s disease can help improve them and allow people to regain some control over their abilities with proper management.

When Should I See a Parkinson’s Disease Specialist?

If you are experiencing any symptoms that you think could be Parkinson’s disease, book an appointment with our neurologists.

Seeing a neurologist is also helpful if you’re concerned about your risk of developing the condition. A neurologist can provide an accurate diagnosis and modern treatment techniques for symptom management.

Parkinson’s Disease Diagnosis

At Dementech Neurosciences, we use comprehensive testing methods to diagnose Parkinson’s disease accurately. Our testing methods can be used to monitor your condition’s progression. Methods we use include:

Computerised assessments of cognitive function

Computerised assessments of cognitive function are pivotal in evaluating changes in your mental ability associated with Parkinson’s disease. These tests gauge memory, attention, and other cognitive skills to aid in early detection and tailored treatment plans.

Leading neurologists with a wealth of clinical expertise carry out our personal assessments. They can identify subtle changes in your symptoms and evaluate your medical history thoroughly.

Advanced brain scans

Advanced brain scans using the latest technology offer detailed insights into your brain’s structure and function. These tests can help to confirm Parkinson’s disease and rule out other conditions.

During the scan, a radioactive substance is injected into your arm and moves up towards your brain. A special camera is then used to detect the gamma rays emitted by the substance, helping to confirm which parts of your brain are affected. This can confirm or rule out Parkinson’s disease.

Blood tests

Blood tests are an emerging diagnostic tool for Parkinson’s disease as they can help detect specific biomarkers associated with the condition.

By taking a multifaceted approach to diagnosis, we can provide early intervention and offer symptom management fast.

If you have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, early intervention and specialist support can be beneficial when managing your symptoms.

Despite no cure being available, Dementech Neurosciences offer a multidisciplinary approach to Parkinson’s treatment to help you manage your symptoms. Our committed specialists will work as a team to provide a personalised treatment plan that manages and monitors your condition.

    Medication for Parkinson’s Disease

Medication is one method for treating Parkinson’s disease. We’ll assess your medical history and symptoms to ensure it’s right for you.

Medication may reduce symptoms like tremors, but the effects can wear off. Long-term use of medication may lead to complications, such as dyskinesia (where your arms, legs and face involuntarily twist).

    Surgery for Parkinson’s Disease

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery is an advanced treatment for Parkinson’s disease, which our specialists may recommend if medication is not suitable or is no longer able to manage your symptoms. DBS may reduce symptoms like tremors, dyskinesia and slow movements.

In DBS, surgeons place a device similar to a pacemaker under the skin of your chest or stomach. They connect it with fine wire to specific parts of your brain. When turned on, the device delivers high-frequency pulses to the brain, changing some of the electrical signals that cause Parkinson’s disease symptoms.

We use innovative technology such as the Parkinson’s KineticGraph (PKG). This small device is worn on your wrist for up to 10 days and collects data on your motor symptoms. We can use this information to identify symptoms and monitor how you respond to treatment.

    Parkinson’s Disease FAQs

Have a question? Seeking further information? Explore our frequently asked questions below, or contact our team today.

While there currently isn’t a cure for Parkinson’s disease, there are many medications and advanced treatments (including brain stimulation surgery) available to help manage the difficult symptoms.

There are multiple risk factors for Parkinson’s disease. These include your age, as most people develop Parkinson’s over the age of 60, genetics, exposure to toxins and sex – men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than men.

If one of your family members suffers or is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, it’s important to assess your own risk and consider preventive measures.

We offer an advanced testing program that can estimate your likelihood of developing Parkinson’s disease. Using cutting-edge technology that has been developed in collaboration with Dementech, we can gain valuable insights that help assess your individual risk and guide early preventive measures.

The effectiveness of the main drug treatment can decrease over time, and its long-term use may cause dyskinesia which is involuntary twisting movements of the arms, legs or face. We carefully assess the risks of this treatment for each patient to ensure safe and effective management of Parkinson’s disease.

The earlier Parkinson’s disease is diagnosed, the more support and long-term treatment options will be available to you. Early diagnosis allows for better management of your symptoms. If the disease is diagnosed at an advanced stage, managing symptoms can be far more challenging.

At Dementech, we carry out Parksinson’s disease tests within two days of them being requested, and we will get the results back within 48 hours.

During a consultation we will carry out an assessment and go through your medical history with a view to getting a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease. From there, you will receive a treatment plan and a full consultation report.

Where possible, we aim to see patients the same day. We will respond to your request within 24 hours (48 hours on weekends).
