Private Parkinson’s disease treatment

State-of-the-art expert-led care

Parkinson’s disease puts a lot of strain on the body. While there is no cure for the condition, Dementech Neurosciences offers services that can diagnose and manage your symptoms.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease affects your nervous system and body parts, such as your hands, which your nerves control. Parkinson’s disease is progressive, meaning it gets worse. There’s no cure for the condition but treatments can help manage your symptoms effectively.

Parkinson’s disease occurs when neurons in your brain slowly break down or die. Many of these neurons would typically produce a chemical called dopamine. Lower dopamine levels can cause irregular brain activity and lead to Parkinson’s disease symptoms like tremors.

The exact cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown.

Parkinson’s disease symptoms

In its early stages, Parkinson’s may not cause noticeable symptoms. However, as it progresses, your symptoms may worsen and become evident.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease include:

  • Tremors – continuous shaking of a limb, typically the hands or fingers
  • Slowed movements (bradykinesia)
  • Muscle stiffness – causing pain and limiting your movement
  • Difficulty multitasking
  • Posture or balance changes – you may stoop more or fall over often
  • Changes in speech – you might start slurring and talking too quietly or quickly
  • Loss of smell
  • Handwriting changes – often, it becomes smaller (micrographia)
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue – sometimes accompanied by sleep disturbances
  • Fluctuating blood pressure

While these symptoms can wreak havoc on daily life, you can see an improvement and begin to regain some control over them with proper management.

When should I see a neurologist?

If you are experiencing any symptoms that you think could be Parkinson’s disease, book an appointment with our neurologists.

Seeing a neurologist is also helpful if you’re concerned about your risk of developing the condition. A neurologist can provide an accurate diagnosis and modern treatment techniques for symptom management.

Diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease

At Dementech Neurosciences, we use comprehensive testing methods to diagnose Parkinson’s disease accurately. We can use our testing methods to monitor your condition’s progression.

Computerised assessments of cognitive function

Computerised assessments of cognitive function are pivotal in evaluating changes in your mental ability associated with Parkinson’s disease. These tests gauge memory, attention, and other cognitive skills to aid in early detection and tailored treatment plans.

Leading neurologists with a wealth of clinical expertise carry out our personal assessments. They can identify subtle changes in your symptoms and evaluate your medical history thoroughly.

Advanced brain scans

Advanced brain scans using the latest DaT technology offer detailed insights into your brain’s structure and function. These tests can help to confirm Parkinson’s disease and rule out other conditions.

During a DaTScan, a radioactive substance is injected into your arm and moves up towards your brain. A special camera is then used to detect the gamma rays emitted by the substance, helping to confirm which parts of your brain are affected. This can confirm or rule out Parkinson’s disease.

Blood tests

Blood tests are an emerging diagnostic tool for Parkinson’s as they can help detect specific biomarkers associated with the disease.

By taking a multifaceted approach to diagnosis, we can provide early intervention and offer symptom management fast.

Private treatment for Parkinson’s disease with Dementech Neurosciences

Despite no cure being available for Parkinson’s disease, early intervention and specialist support can be beneficial when managing your symptoms.

At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to Parkinson’s treatment. Our committed specialists will work as a team to provide a personalised treatment plan that manages and monitors your condition.

    Medication

Medication is one treatment method. We’ll assess your medical history and symptoms to ensure it’s right for you.

Medication may reduce symptoms like tremors, but the effects can wear off. Long-term use of medication may lead to complications, such as dyskinesia (where your arms, legs and face involuntarily twist).

    Surgery

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery is an advanced treatment for Parkinson’s disease, which our specialists may advise if medication is not suitable or no longer manages your symptoms. DBS may reduce symptoms like tremors, dyskinesia and slow movements.

In DBS, surgeons place a device similar to a pacemaker under the skin of your chest or stomach. They connect it with fine wire to specific parts of your brain. When turned on, the device delivers high-frequency pulses to the brain, changing some of the electrical signals that cause Parkinson’s symptoms.

We use innovative technology like The Parkinson’s KineticGraph (PKG). The PKG is a small device you wear on your wrist for up to 10 days. It collects data on any motor symptoms of Parkinson’s you may experience. We can use this information to identify symptoms and monitor how you respond to treatment.

    Meet Our Specialists

London is home to a distinguished group of leading specialists in Parkinson’s disease, who enjoy global recognition for their expertise in this field. These specialists are at the forefront of pioneering research, diagnosis, and treatment of Parkinson’s disease, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of patients. Their extensive clinical experience, coupled with access to state-of-the-art medical facilities and resources, enables them to deliver comprehensive care and innovative therapies tailored to the unique needs of each individual. Whether it’s advancing our understanding of the disease through groundbreaking research or providing personalised treatment plans that improve the quality of life for patients, London’s Parkinson’s disease specialists are renowned for their dedication to tackling this intricate neurological condition.

While there is currently a lot of research being conducted around PD and ways to diagnose the disease, unfortunately, there is no single test to diagnose Parkinson’s at the moment. However, accurate diagnosis is critical in neurology and even more so for degenerative conditions – so we use the highest quality technology, coupled with some of the world’s most renowned experts in Parkinson’s Disease, to deliver an accurate diagnosis, helping us guide our patients to the best possible course of treatment.

Due to the complexity involved in testing, the wrong diagnosis is common with many neurological diseases. A wrong diagnosis can expose you to the wrong course of treatment and a negative outcome. We rely on only the top PD experts to work at Dementech and provide the highest standard assessments and quality of care for every individual suffering from Parkinson’s.

At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer different levels of care to treat patients with Parkinson’s and support them in their management of the symptoms. We understand that it can be far more effective to prevent disease, and so our approach involves risk assessments, prevention strategies and helpful tools to treat the condition and lessen its impact.

However, in cases where a diagnosis of a disease has been established already, our multidisciplinary team will do everything possible to treat symptoms and prevent them from progressing further.

If one of your family members suffers or is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease, we offer an advanced testing program that can detect the probability of you ever developing the disease. Thanks to the cutting-edge technology that has been developed in collaboration with Dementech, we can benefit from valuable insights in terms of being able to assess the possibility of your developing Parkinson’s Disease.

Having this test is of critical importance for people who could be genetically predisposed. The earlier you are diagnosed, the more help we can provide with a long-term course of treatment and symptom management tools. When Parkinson’s Disease is diagnosed at an advanced stage, it is more difficult to deal with the common symptoms.

At Dementech, we are committed to using the latest and most advanced testing methods. We collaborate with famous universities and medical organisations for the development of new testing methods and experimental treatments. We also use a combination of testing methods to establish an accurate diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease, helping you to receive the best possible support.

At Dementech Neurosciences, we offer a multidisciplinary approach to treating Parkinson’s Disease. Our team of experts work together to provide an individual treatment plan to monitor symptoms and manage the condition.

While there currently isn’t a cure for Parkinson’s Disease, there are many medications and advanced treatments (including brain stimulation surgery) available to help manage the difficult symptoms. Please note that the effectiveness of the main drug treatment can wear off over time, and its long-term use can cause dyskinesia, and involuntary twisting movements of the arms, legs or face. We will be sure to assess the risks of this treatment across each patient.

Our team of PD specialists includes a speech and language therapist, occupational therapist, dietitian, psychologist and psychiatrist who provide speech therapy, nutrition advice and counselling. Alongside this expert team, we use state-of-the-art technology such as The Parkinson’s KinetiGraph (PKG) to monitor and effectively treat symptoms and complications of PD.

We are proud to be London’s leading provider of specialist private neurology, psychiatry and psychology services. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement. It is caused by the degeneration of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain. The exact cause of Parkinson’s disease is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

There are multiple risk factors for Parkinson’s disease. These include your age, as most people develop Parkinson’s over the age of 60, genetics, exposure to toxins and sex – men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s disease than men.

At Dementech, we carry out Parksinson’s disease tests within two days of them being requested, and we will get the results back within 48 hours.

During a consultation we will carry out an assessment and go through your medical history with a view to getting a diagnosis on Parkinson’s Disease. From there, you will receive a treatment plan and a full consultation report.

Where possible, we aim to see patients the same day. We will respond to your request within 24 hours (48 hours on weekends)
